From delfeus:

Comment to this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.

Monty Python

Amusement through absurdity, insight in insanity. Plays with tension-within-meaning and is rife with references to the liberal arts I so adore (and which are as amusing, absurd, insightful and insane as anything the Python crew ever cooked up). Ridiculous accents, postures, stereotypes and costumes. Their understanding of plot, communications policy and custom, and especially their blithe enthusiasm for messing with them all. But above all, the fact that they managed to make simple sketches that continue to amaze us with their capacity to feed the all-consuming fires of academia.

Funny songs/acts
It's funny you should ask me, of all people, about funny songs. After all, I'm effectively deaf when it comes to lyrics, and I just can't be bothered with sparing any of my bumbling brainpower for listening to lyrics. Because once upon a time I wasn't deaf to lyrics, and they tended to be no more profound then than they are now. In that sense, all songs are funny to me. Squeezing sense out of the inane is, of course, simply a matter of cognitive juggling and academic bullshitting - some of my favourite pastimes - but I'd rather tackle more rewarding topics. Like music itself.

When I hear a song, I hear music. The human voice is an instrument, and it's beauty (and the appreciation thereof) should not be hamstrung by the mere semantic content of the utterances it creates. Countless times I've heard people say how disagreeable lyrics ruined this or that sing for them - never so with me.

By the way: one of my favourite songs of all time is Nik Kershaw's 'The Riddle', which, as the songwriter himself has stated, makes no actual sense whatsoever. I like it because its lyrics were clearly chosen for their prosodic value, not to put together an explicit message. Which is, of course, a message in itself. But regardless of everything, 'The Riddle', true to its name, has inspired numerous interpretations as to its Meaning. If you're now wondering why this is brilliant to me, you may want to re-read my comments on Monty Python.

Why you, Delfeus, would associate me with funny songs and acts is probably Robert Brown (our now retired translation teacher). After all, I was there when he introduced Flanders & Swann to your musical and comical palate.

And if Bobby isn't a funny act, nothing is.

Roleplaying

Ah, roleplaying games, my age-old companion!

They're stories. What's more, they're stories you cook up sitting around a table with other people. You may have a world for which you create characters, or you may have characters in need of a world to interact with. Or perhaps you have neither and would like to see how characters and their environment shape each other through the negotiations you have with your fellow players.

You don't have to be strong, quick, rich or even smart - all you need is the genuine desire to add the fruit of your imagination, no matter how meagre, to that of your friends' to create something greater than you'd thought the sum of its could ever be, brilliant, funny, insightful and so very alive.

Some people claim that they've lost their imagination and creativity since childhood. I've yet to meet any such whom roleplaying games hadn't proven to be mistaken.

Heinlein

Robert A. Heinlein wrote some of the most influential works in the history of science fiction. A few exceptions aside, his stories are highly readable in terms of linguistic complexity and narrative structure, which is quite a feat for an author as overtly didactic and clearly insightful as he. He had things to say on countless topics, including religion, social structures, culture, economics, technology, and, above all, people.

And sex. Mustn't forget about the sex.

Except for in the juveniles, which he wrote for boys 1950s-1970s, usually starring what amounted to a plucky boy scout in space (sometimes even literally).

Interested? You might want to try out some of these:
Starship Troopers
Stranger in a Strange Land
Job: A Comedy of Justice
Friday
The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress
Citizen of the Galaxy

and, for Delfeus' pleasure, Double Star

Of these, Starship Troopers and Citizen of the Galaxy would probably be the niftiest introductory works by the virtue of being under 200 pages in length and still containing full-blown stories.

Comics

Comics make our minds shape static drawn panels with written narration and dialogue into lively, colourful stories. More literary than film, more cinematic than books, and not really like either of them. Comics tell stories that no other medium could convey.

Comics are equal to all other media. Equal but separate. And, as it happens, also home to some of the best creative minds of the last few generations. The unacknowledged corners of culture always make the best sanctuaries for the truly inventive.

uutuutena järjestämme myös figuurinmaalauskilpailun, jossa kilpailijat
pistävät pensseleillä parastaan palkinnon toivossa! Lopputulos on
varmasti näkemisen arvoista!

Luvassa on luonnollisesti myös hilpeäksi muodostunutta linjaa jatkava
elokuvanäytös. Varoitus: olemme todenneet mielenterveydelle

05:01 am: Itseni mainostamista
Muusajuhlat 2007 31.8.-8.9.

Sunnuntai 2.9. - Uranian, tähtitieteen muusan, juhlapäivä

Klo 14 Paranormaalit ilmiöt -keskustelutilaisuus
Nallikari Campingin Nallikahvila, Leiritie 10
Huutomerkki ry
Mistä me puhumme, kun me puhumme telepatiasta? Ennen puhelimen keksimistä Alexander Graham Bell osallistui spiritistisiin istuntoihin saadakseen yhteyden edesmenneeseen veljeensä Melvilleen. Henry James automaattikirjoitti parikin romaania sihteerinsä välityksellä kuolemansa jälkeen.
Uranian päivänä teemaa valotetaan laaja-alaisesti. Aiheesta ovat keskustelemassa muun muassa FT Pertti Rautiainen Oulun yliopiston tähtitieteen laitokselta, Valorinki ry:n varapuheenjohtaja Olli Pajula sekä englannin laitoksella gradua tekevä Tuomas Kuusniemi.

04:06 pm: Drama in English! (from Mark Smith's EKL mailing list post)
Dear theatre-lovers,

I am hoping to restart our English-language drama group, with a view to regular
(weekly) meetings leading to one or more productions next year.

If you would be interested in participating (not just as an actor: potential
back-stage crew are also welcome), please come to an information meeting on...

**Tuesday 28 November at 4pm*** in Humus-kuppila.

This is not a course, just an opportunity to get involved in drama in English.

If you are interested but cannot attend the meeting on Tuesday, please send me
an email to let me know.

This group is open to all students, not only those currently studying English.
So spread the word!

Mark Smith

08:38 pm: Linguistic Hit List: Academic English
An excerpt from the reading I have to plough through for my philosophy course:

"And in cases of perceptual relativity, since objects with different qualities are experienced from each of the different perspectives or under each of the relevant conditions, at most one of these various immediately experienced or given objects could be the physical object itself; it is then further argued that since there is no apparent experiential basis for regarding one out of any such set of related perceptual experiences as the one in which the relevant physical object is immediately experienced, the most reasonable conclusion is that the immediately experienced or given object is always distinct from the physical object (or, significantly more weakly, that there is no way to identify which, if any, of the immediately experienced objects is the physical object itself, so that the evidential force of the experience is in this respect the same in all cases, and it is epistemologically as though physical objects were never given, whether or not that is in fact the case)." -from 'Epistemological Problems of Perception' by Laurence Bonjour

This is just one example of the gross abuses of the English language by the academic community. These our supposed colleagues in humanities studies are in dire need of a (preferably very painful) lesson in reasonable sentence length. Similar violations many of us have "immediately experienced" through the abysmal writings of certain German translation theorists - people who dare claim to be experts in communication.

The academic "style" of English is in serious need of de-raping.

This is quite possibly the most impressive piece of visual art I have ever come across.

Riemurasia has at times proved itself to be a wonderful website. :)
